Chinese auto giant Geely launched its first methanol-electric hybrid power car and a methanol heavy truck in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, on June 30.

The vehicles will contribute to low-carbon transportation and the upgrading and transformation of industrial structure.

Geely's new methanol-electric hybrid power car has an energy conservation rate of 40 percent, and the methanol consumption per hundred kilometers is as low as 9.2 liters, which means the travel cost per km is less than 0.3 yuan ($0.04).

Over the past 17 years, Geely has solved problems related to methanol resistance and the durability of methanol engine parts, and held more than 200 core technologies for methanol vehicles. It engages in the R&D, manufacture, and marketing of methanol vehicles.

Geely currently has more than 20 types of methanol passenger cars and business cars, and has sold 27,000 methanol vehicles.

Guizhou is currently devoted to the construction of a national ecological civilization pilot zone, and the promotion of methanol vehicles will help it promote supply-side structural reforms in energy and boost the real economy.

As part of the first batch of pilot areas for methanol vehicles, Guizhou has established a complete system for methanol vehicle production, sales, service, and methanol supply.

The province has also launched various policies to encourage the operation and improve management of methanol vehicles.

Guizhou has promoted 17,000 methanol vehicles oriented to the market and put 60 methanol refilling stations into operation. The province consumes about 250,000 metric tons of methanol annually, replacing 150,000 tons of gasoline.

Guiyang's number of methanol taxis, methanol vehicles and methanol refilling stations all rank first in the country, making it the most successful city in terms of methanol and methanol vehicle promotion.
