The Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the Institute of Scientific and Technological Information of China on Feb 15 released their list of the top 100 cities with innovative capacity in 2022 in China.

The city of Guiyang – capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – ranked 29th.

The term innovative cities in this context refers to those with strong independent innovation capacity, prominent sci-tech support, and playing a leading role in high-level of economic and social sustainable development, as well as having a significant influence that radiates throughout a region and a driving role.

In 2010, Guiyang was selected to be in the second batch of national innovative pilot cities and it was approved as a national innovative city in 2017. By the end of 2022, the Ministry of Science and Technology had supported 103 cities to build national innovative cities.

Since receiving the title of national innovative city, Guiyang's Big Data Expo Leading Scientific and Technological Achievements Award has been selected to be in the national Social Science and Technology Award Catalogue. It is reputedly the only professional award taking its name from the expo – and is the only major award with big data as its theme, accelerating the construction of innovative cities.

Additionally, the Guiyang bureau of science and technology is also relying on a platform of scientific and technological innovation and entrepreneurship activities to build a bridge for the commercialization of research achievements and smooth financing channels.
