Founded during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), Qingyan Ancient Town served as a mountainous military city developed for military defense and was known as the "Southern Gate" of Guiyang.

The planned total area of Qingyan Ancient Town scenic area is approximately 5.8 square kilometers, with streets and lanes paved with stones and residential houses featuring stone walls, counters, and courtyards.

The layout of the town featured well-preserved gates, tiled roofs, and double-eave gable and hip roofs, retaining the architectural styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1644-1911). The town has four main streets, 26 small streets and alleys, and numerous ancient structures such as towers, pavilions, temples, palaces, shrines, and courtyards.

In 2005, Qingyan Ancient Town was included in the second batch of China's famous historical and cultural towns by the Ministry of Construction and the State Cultural Relics Bureau. In 2017, the town was named a national 5A-level tourist attraction, making it the first national 5A-level tourist attraction in Guiyang.
