Hidden on Liyu Street in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, is a unique bakery where the first thing you see is a wall filled with French movie posters.
The bakery is run by a young Frenchman, Diego, and his Chinese wife. Diego was once a director, and before opening the bakery, both worked in film-related jobs in France. In 2022, the couple fell in love with Guiyang during a visit and decided to stay and open a French bakery.
The 55-square-meter shop was originally a dilapidated warehouse. The couple simply painted the walls, preserving the building's rough, original appearance, and covered the entrance wall with movie posters. The shop has an open layout, allowing customers to see the entire bread-making process from kneading to baking.
Since 2022, Diego has launched nearly 200 types of bread and pastries, with most ingredients imported from France, adhering to healthy and pure French flavors. Interestingly, Diego enjoys adding local specialties like fermented tofu, Guizhou-style sausages, Guizhou peppers, and Zheergen vegetable root into bread, pizzas, and baguettes, which have been well-received by customers.
On Saturday nights, the bakery transforms into a screening room. The couple sits with customers to chat about movies, bread, France, or Guiyang. "We don't want this place to be just a bakery. We hope to integrate bread, movies, and life together," Diego said.
Many customers are curious about French culture and if the opportunity arises they plan to hold some French cultural exchange events in the future.
